The downside of popularity is that it can often lead to loneliness. This was what happened to our Gala apples, which were sad and lonely with no partner. So we set off to do some matchmaking, and after a number of casting sessions and a good many hopeful fruity candidates, our Gala apple ended up falling for our little prune, no doubt charmed by its powerful taste and sturdy character. Love is in the air – or at least in the orchard!
